Chapter 24 ~ Rhythm and Blues
This chapter follows South Beach Chapter 30: Objects in Motion
South Beach: Metro Area, Dreamscape Studio ~ Tuesday Afternoon
Beams from the late afternoon sun illuminated the small art studio as Peri absently studied a few pieces she had recently been commissioned to do. Her abstracts had grown in popularity and a local art gallery had approached her about a showing. It would certainly help pass the time with Heydon leaving and the kids starting school.
None of that seemed to matter right now as she contemplated her behavior at Slim's party. Heydon had been right of course; she always seemed to do something outrageous right before he left to tour. She didn't understand why she continually tested him or why she chose Daniel to taunt him. It had been an egregious error in judgment on her part, there was no doubt of that.
Peri knew she had gone too far and prayed that Heydon would forgive her this time. Catching sight of her reflection she studied her face with a seeming detachment. She was pretty, she knew that, but underneath the dazzle was a frightened, insecure girl. If it was reassurance that she needed, why had she chosen such a destructive way to get it, she wondered?
The soft jingling of the bell on the studio door brought her back to reality and sighing she turned to see who had entered. "What are you doing here?" Peri walked toward him purposefully.
"Thought I might commission a few pieces for my place; it could use your artistic touch," Daniel's smooth voice sent chills along her spine. After all this time, she was still affected by his charms, especially when he was sober. Stepping back, Peri answered, "That really isn't a good idea Danny; you shouldn't be here at all, not after the other day."
Laughing, Daniel admired a few paintings, "Oh come on Peri, and I'm not going to jump you. You made it clear at Slim's that you don't want me anymore." Turning once more his eyes filled with regret, "That doesn't mean we can't be friends, does it? We used to be real good friends."
Daniel approached her slowly. "Damn him," she thought, "why does he make me feel this way?" Barely able to speak, he was so close to her now, she whispered, "Danny please don't do this."
"Jesus, Peri do you have any idea how much I regret that day? Regret losing you?" Drawing her close, Daniel buried his face in her silky blonde hair inhaling the delicate essence he remembered as though it was yesterday. "I haven't been the same man since then Peri. I've tried, believe me, I've tried to go on like we were never together but I can't fill that void."

Her anger rising, Peri pushed him away, "No Daniel. I love Heydon. I made my choice a long time ago. Please, you have to move on! I deeply regret flirting with you at Slim's. I just may have ruined my marriage because of it!"

Turning away she begged him, "Just go Danny; leave me be."

Daniel stood there rocked to his core as though he lost her all over again. "After all this time, after everything I have done to show you I've changed, you still can't see it? I know you love me Peri," his voice was thick with emotion.

Wheeling around Peri threw him a scathing look, "You've changed? Don't be ridiculous! I will never forgive you and I will never forget Daniel!" She let out a short laugh, "Maybe I torment you to continually punish you, did you ever think of that?"

"That's not who you are Peri," his voice trailed off sadly. Unable to face her anymore, Daniel turned and headed toward the door, stopping only when she spoke once more, "Get some help with your drinking Danny. Find a decent girl; move on. It's no use looking back anymore."

Bay View:Market Street, Romero Apartment ~ Wednesday Morning

His last night before leaving was nothing like what he had hoped. Tyler spent a difficult night unable to sleep. Between the throbbing in his hand and the empty bed…maybe he would have time for a coffee at the airport at least.

Flexing his hand slightly, he winced. Still, it had been worth it for his own self satisfaction if nothing else, and he wouldn't need it at 100% for a few days. Tyler left his apartment building and stepped out into the bright morning.
The cab driver had already come for his bags. All that was left was for him to get in and take off. His future lay before him and yet it still felt lacking. Hesitating, he stared down the empty street. He hadn’t expected Amanda to show up, and he wasn't sure what he would have done if she had.

"Forget it," he grumbled to himself. "Don't look back, man, let it go." "You ready to go Mr. Romero?" the cab driver called from behind the wheel. Yeah, he was ready. Wanted this since he could remember.

Turning, Tyler stepped into the cab and easing into the seat, looked ahead.
South Beach:Hillside, Whitney Residence ~ Wednesday Morning

Daniel paced back and forth, restless and edgy until he finally stopped in front of an oil painting he had purchased from Peri's gallery. Squeezing his eyes shut he ran through their encounter from the previous afternoon. No matter how he tried to spin it, the outcome was always the same. She didn't believe he had changed or ever would.

And it was the truth. He had done nothing to rectify the hurt he caused her all those years ago. Maybe it didn't matter anymore. Maybe she would never see past the folly his life has been since she left him. Reaching toward the cell phone that lay on his bed, he began to dial.

Sucking in a deep breath, he began to speak, "Hello Shana; it's Danny. Yeah, a long time…listen, we're going to be in your area in a few weeks. I'd like to meet…I'll call you when we're close."

A light rain was still falling from the few remaining clouds while the sun began to slowly and relentlessly burst through. As he made his way to the limo parked in front of his home, Daniel felt hopeful for the first time in years.
South Beach:Central Loop, O'Malley Residence ~ Wednesday Morning

Smiling gently, Lakin stood quietly in the archway and watched as Aidan's reflection smiled back at her. "I didn't want to wake you until I was just about ready to leave," he softly spoke.

Out of all the band members, Aidan was the quiet one, gentle and sweet but that was what appealed most to Lakin. What you saw was what you got with Aidan. Carefully slipping his hands around her waist, Aidan pulled her in close as Lakin's hand slid slowly down the length of his silky ponytail. Chuckling softly he teased, "I might just cut it off while we're on the road…what do you think?"

"I think you could shave your head and I would still think you were the hottest guy out there." Moving her hand along his arm she whispered, I'm going to miss you like crazy Aidan." Drawing her in close he responded by lightly kissing her nose, "When we get to a venue where there's downtime in between shows, I thought you could fly out." Lakin's face lit up, "I'd like that a lot."

As Aidan's bass guitar knocked against his back, he made his way down to the limo, mentally running through their itinerary hoping that opportunity would present itself soon.

South Beach:North Peninsula, Mitchell Residence ~ Wednesday Morning

Peri smoothed the shoulder of Heydon's silk vest as she asked what time his flight was again. "How many times are you going to ask me that Peri?" he responded in a flat tone. "I just thought maybe we could spend some time together before you leave, like we always do," she cooed. "But this isn't like the other times Peri. I can't just pretend things are fine anymore."

Bouncing almost breathlessly into her parents' room, Cadence smiled at her father, her eyes dancing with excitement, "Daddy, the limousine is here!" As Heydon returned his daughter's smile, Peri gasped slightly, wanting more time to make things right before her husband left.

Taking Cadence's delicate hands in his, Heydon spoke, his voice a soothing, deep bass, "You behave for your mom sweetheart and remember our deal about the car. I'm a phone call or an email away if you need me and I want to hear from you often." Cadence studied her father for a long moment. His face was drawn, weary; she had never realized how hard it was for him to leave them until now. She didn't understand why, but her heart felt a little like it was breaking.

Reaching for her, Heydon smiled reassuringly, "Now come here and give your old man a big squeeze. I'll miss you pumpkin."

As Cadence ran back down the stairs, Heydon turned once more to his wife and, taking her hand, said, "I'll call you baby. I gotta go."

Bay View:Southern Coast, Holloway Residence ~ Wednesday Morning

Shaun had been walking on clouds since Stevie had proposed to him. Chuckling at the thought, he murmured softly, "Are you ready gorgeous?"

The cabbie had taken their bags already. One last look around and they headed for the car.

Shaun reached for the door and then hesitated, turned toward Stevie and smiled. Pulling her close he wrapped his hands in her thick hair as Stevie allowed her hands to roam the broad expanse of Shaun's back and shoulders.

"I love you Stevie; I've always loved you," Shaun's eyes were lit with joy a reflection of the feelings in his heart.

Stevie lovingly gazed back and whispered, "I love you to Shaun. We should probably get moving. We'll be cutting it close…"
South Beach:Northern Shore, Stanfield Residence ~ Wednesday Morning

Cooper pulled Rayne close and closed his eyes as warm hands encircled his neck. He breathed her in; she smelled fresh, always fresh, like the damp air after a spring shower. His little Rayne Drop. Beth stood arms folded as myriad emotions rushed over her.

Memorizing every single thing about his daughter, Cooper sighed.

"Don’t you grow up before I get back, baby girl.” Rainie kicked her sandaled feet, giggling.

“Da!” she laughed again, clutching at Cooper’s t-shirt with one small hand. He held onto her, stroking her hair, so much like his own. “That’s right sweetie. And Daddy loves you.”

He set her gently on the floor, kissing the top of her head, while Rainie continued to babble. About the only clear word apart from Da was something that sounded like bug. And probably was bug. “Don’t eat any more bugs,” Cooper whispered.

“I love you,” he murmured. “I want you to come with me. Both of you. You know that.” Twining her fingers in his hair, so hard to keep from breaking down, crying, which she was not going to do to him, Beth whispered, “I love you back Coop.”

“Da!” Behind them, Rainie beat her feet on the floor insistently, demanding. “Da!”

“I’ll call you as soon as I get there. You’re going to be at the beach house?”

That whole unsettling experience at Ryan’s house came flooding back, along with a surge of emotion, overwhelming love, and anger – how had she ever thought about anyone but Cooper. “I’ll be there,” she assured him. “I’ll be waiting for you. Nobody else. Ever.”

Beth picked up Rainie, who protested, still trying to get to Cooper. It was so hard to watch him walk away. Fighting it, she bounced her daughter on her hip, telling her quietly, “He’ll be back, sugar. He will.”
South Beach:Coastside International Airport ~ Wednesday Late Morning

The limos delivered their passengers to the airport as the airport valets began the process of checking and loading the luggage. While the band members each waited, lost in their own thoughts, Slim approached Cooper. "It's going to seem a little strange staying behind. Who's going to scope out the best bars and keep your ass in line if I'm not there?" Slim joked.

Laughing, Cooper responded, "Don't worry I'll wait until you get there to raise hell. And I promise I can keep my own ass in line but it does seem a little strange. Anyway, you'll be there in a week with Rafe and Stevie's backup so it won't be that long."

In typical fashion, the rain clouds that had threatened to open up all day had finally let loose as a mild shower began to fall. As the others headed inside the terminal, Cooper and Slim turned to make sure the last bags were being managed when they saw Tyler exit his cab and stroll toward them. "I wonder where Shaun and Stevie are," Slim mused, "they're cutting it pretty close."

"Is everything all right?" Cooper asked him, remembering his first tour and the bundle of nerves he had been. Tyler directed his eyes at Cooper as he slid his hand slightly behind his muscular thigh. "It's fine; I just need a large cup of coffee. All my stuff is in storage and I didn't have time to get one," he answered. "Don't wander too far, Tyler; the plane will be leaving soon," Slim cautioned, "assuming your band mates get here in the next few minutes."

On cue, Shaun and Stevie arrived breathless and nearly giddy. "That was cutting it close," Slim grumbled, "where the hell have you two been?" Shaun was uncharacteristically animated as he blurted, "Sorry we had an important stop to make on the way to the airport! It couldn't be helped." Turning toward Cooper he announced, "Stevie and I got married!" Cooper's face lit up, "Congratulations man! That's great news!"

Two long strides and Cooper was enveloping Stevie in a warm embrace. "I'm really happy for you Stevie, for both of you," he spoke softly in her ear as he continued to hug her, "Shaun is a lucky guy." Smiling, Stevie choked back her emotions and responded, "I'm the lucky one Cooper, believe me." Interrupting, Slim urged them, "You've got to get on that plane before the rain gets any heavier Coop."

Hurrying out to the tarmac they approached the private jet quickly as the rain relentlessly pelted them. Tyler looked up at the plane that carried their gear as it flew overhead toward their first destination. This was it, the realization of dreams, new beginnings, second chances, and difficult separations.

Oh Gayl. This has to be one of the best you've ever done! The concept is stunning! Featuring each one of them in their own homes, with their own fears and concerns, playing anxiety off hope, regret and excitement, love and terrible loss.
I feel so bad for Danny. Whatever he did, it must have been killer, since Peri obviously still feels very strongly about him. Terribly sad, and the shots in the studio are just gorgeous!
Heydon seems to have already started putting up an emotional wall between him and his wife. The contrast between the way he says goodbye to Cadie and the way he avoids Peri is just striking.
Aiden -- I am so happy for him! He's such a good guy, and Laiken seems to realize it! I love that shot with the piano!
What can I say about Stevie and Shaun except HURRAY!!! I love that couple so much!! They look gorgeous together and complement one another perfectly!
Tyler...well, he's better off without her. He's hurting, physically as well as emotionally, but he would have felt worse if he hadn't sent Amanda away.
And Cooper...gorgeous, sweet, strong, and full of electricity! So he's going to raise some hell on the road huh? LOL!
The shots are the airport are just beyond belief wonderful! The last one, with the plane taking off -- OMG!!! You could not have chosen a better image to close with, or to symbolize the entire chapter.
A masterpiece. A total masterpiece!
Thank you as always for your support, guidance, helping me up the rocky mountain and keeping me from falling off the cliff. I could not have done this one without you.
I will reveal some of the past between Peri and Daniel perhaps next chapter. I have to remind myself not too push it out too fast. I am pretty excited about what is coming.
Shaun and Stevie are a terrific couple indeed. I hope they will always be this happy!
Heydon has a lot going on in his head right now. He feels betrayed. I mean how long can a man put up with that behavior? It gets old, fast. And Tyler deserves a good woman who will appreciate him.
Having these guys on the road is going to be a kick in the pants, especially with the upcoming scenes, the hotels, the venues, all of it.
You'll get there, the next part. Nothing like a challenge!
and as always, you are so welcome
Oh, wow. They're off. It was nice to see each of them say goodbye in their own ways to their loved ones and them come together at the end.
Still, the thing most prevalent in my mind is what's going to happen when Cooper goes away. I know it's been consistently stated that Cooper and Beth are pretty much in twu luv... but the scenes I seen with Beth and Ryan prove to be so... I don't know. I just know something is going to happen and I'm not sure what it'll result in. Poor Cooper, maybe it's a freak thing and nothing happens or Beth runs off and avoids the bodyguard all together, lol.
Poor Tyler, at least his hand isn't permanently damage. Anyone who socks Gabe gets my kudos, LOL!
For as much trouble as you mentioned having, you really can't tell. :) Definitely looking forward to the scenes with these guys on the road!
Tyler gets big kudos in my book too Mao, not only for ripping Gabe apart but for booting Amanda out the door. He deserves better treatment.
Beth and Ryan...well it is hard to tell where that may go however I do know 2 things...Ryan does not dally with people he is paid to protect. It's distracting and goes against his code for lack of a better word. And Beth is truly in love with Cooper. There is definitely something there but whether or not it is ever acted upon remains to be seen.
I am very excited about the upcoming chapters! I hope I can pull it off. It requires set building which I am terrible at and some patience on my part. Which I am also bad at.
Beautiful shots Gayl! And I love sort of being re-introduced to all the band members, I kind of get them confused or forget about some of them.
The emotions were flying high in this one weren't they? I only wish my house was quieter to fully appreciate your wonderful writing (two teengage girls & my hubby watching a ridiculously stupid new horror movie) My poor ears!
Anyway, so Shaun and Stevie did it, yay! At least they're going on tour together, that saves a lot of grief worrying over what the other is doing!
The most heartwrenching scene for me was of course Cooper's departure, his face was so sincere saying goodbye to Rayne, *tears*
Wonderful piece Gayl, and the last shot was of course fabulous!
Awww, thanks Em! Yes Shaun and Stevie did it! They are beside themselves and deliriously happy. There were a lot of emotions for sure. And since I sort of lost track of the other band mates for a bit, I wanted to draw them back in. I hope to touch on each of them as much as I can.
Cooper and Rayne...those emotions were from the heart. He really loves his baby girl and she adores daddy doesn't she?
Beautiful shots all the way from shot one to the last one... I have to say though, that the last shot was my favorite... Simply pefect!!! the sky, the clouds, the rain, the airplane, everything was just perfect!
I have to agree with Beth the concept for this chapter was excellent, it was really nice to go inside everybody's life and see the painful and heartbreaking good-byes...
I don't feel sorry for Peri at all she is a grown up woman, she should have known better... (LOL) however, I do feel extremely sorry for Danny, I don't know why, I can't wait to see what happened in their past!
Congratulation to Shaun and Stevie, I'm so very happy for them, I'm so glad they married before the tour!!!
Heydon, well I wish him the best, he is a wonderful man, a wonderful dad, and hopefully the stupid behavior of his wife wont put an end to his marriage.... they have been together for how long? 20+ years? It will be really sad to see a marriage ending.... but it is quite obvious that Peri still has some feelings for Danny....
Tyler, oh poor Tyler, he looks so sad :( Hopefully he will find someone soon! he does deserve someone better and less complicated that Lady A!
Cooper... so sweet, so romantic and loving.... he deserves the best and hopefully dear Beth wont ruin her marriage for a hot moment!! :D lol
(but I'm dying to see Beth and Ryan again) LOL but it doesn't mean I want Cooper to find out!!!
What the eyes don't see, the heart doesn't grieve over... but if something was about to happen with B & R... I really doubt it would end it one night!!! :D
Beautiful writing like always and this is one of your best chapter!!
You outdid yourself with the pictures and I can't hardly wait for next chapter!!! Bravo!!! I bow to you and your talent!!! Amazing!!!
Thank you Sandy! I wish I was better with Photoshop but I get by so I guess that's ok.
Peri is a beautiful woman but very insecure and immature in some ways. I certainly hope she hasn't damaged her marriage but after all this time, her behavior becomes tiring for Heydon.
As for Shaun and Stevie, well once she makes up her mind, there is no dissuading or stopping her. She made her decision and pushed ahead to make it happen and Shaun was quite happy to go along.
I will be showing what happened in Danny and Peri's past but I don't know at what point it will make it into the story. Soon though.
Tyler does deserve a good woman and hopefully he will find her. I feel bad for him. He is such a good guy.
What the eyes don't see, the heart doesn't grieve over... I love that expression and you never cease to amaze me with the almost poetic way you express things. As for Ryan and Beth, I am dying to see what happens too!
Thank you again for reading Sandy. It means so much to me.
I am breathless,
Beautiful and emotional update. I love how you took us through all the band members goodbyes...
You masterfully captured the emotions and your screens are excellent.
I feel for Peri and Heydon, although I have to say it would be hard to put up with that kind of behavior for so long. Still the kiss at the end gave me hope, LOL.
And good for Tyler, hope his hands get better soon.
I think you need amazing with the pictures Gayl, I don't really think you need photoshop to capture the mood of your story, in fact your writing doesn't need picture at all, but it is always nice to have all those handsome men around, and you pay detail to every set and every shot...photoshop is not needed, but if you ever need help with a picture I will be glad to help :D lol
but believe me, your pictures are great and awesome the way they are!!!
Thank you Cherie. I am so glad that it came across the way I intended. I am my own worst critic and won't fail to read and re-read picking every little thing apart. I did really enjoy this chapter and am very excited about what is to come!
Thank you Sandy! I may take you up on that some time regarding Photoshop. I have some things I want to do and no idea how I am going to accomplish the effects. But that is awhile down the road.
I meant to say "You DID amazing with the pictures" lol sorry... I don't know where the "need" came from!
I will be glad to help whenever you need it! :D
All the pictures were wonderful Gayl but particularly that last shot of the plane. That is awesome.
I don't know why but I get an unsettling sense of forboding. Maybe it's nothing but as I was reading this chapter, I felt like something was going to happen to change lives.
Great update. A little teary when all the families were saying goodbye to their respective others.
This has got to be one of my favourite chapters, just those quick little touches with everyone as they get ready to leave, and this sense that all of them will be on a slightly different path when they return. So much love, hope, uncertainty and new horizons all in one update.
Anghard: Yes things are going to change for some people. Some for worse and some for better. I liked how that last shot came about too. It worked out nicely!
Goodbye_sun: I do think they will be on different paths when they get home. All of them will be gone a long time. While some futures are uncertain, others seem to be moving forward.
Thank you both for reading!
There's a great sense of anticipation hanging over this chapter, as they each leave their homes to embark on their shared journey. I can't wait to see what that journey holds in store for everyone.
And the ones that are left behind ...
Great job!
Thank you Saoz. Hopefully I can do justice to the tour. It won't be easy and I will need to re-design the concert venues a few times.
I am excited about what is coming though if I can ever get to it.
Gayl, that was wonderful. Like showing men going off to war, it was touching, heart-warming, deeply emotional, you hit all the notes perfectly.
These guys are intriguing to the extreme. And I cannot wait to see them on tour!
Also you peaked my interest with Peri/Danny backstory, can't wait to see how that unfolds.
How seamlessly yours and beth's chapter's flow...and the shots! You guys put me to shame!
Those last shots of everyone standing on the tarmac...wonderful!
Love the relationship between Stevie and Shaun...is there a 'THUD' shoot coming for that hunk? LOL!
And they are married, how delightful!
Sorry, I hope Tyler's hand gives him pain, how DARE he hit Gabe, no matter how much he deserves it, LOL!!! (not really)LOL!
With Cooper gone, how will Beth fight her lust factor for Ryan? Can't wait to see.
Great work gayl, I loved this!!!
Thank you Karen! I was pretty happy with how this one unfolded myself. Danny and Peri's back-story may not happen in the next chapter. Timing is everything and I am trying to be mindful of that.
LOL I actually did post a Thud shoot of Shaun. You probably didn't notice it after the heat from Ryan's!
Glad to have you back!
How did I miss that???? Thud factor...here I come...Shaun!!! *drool*
That was really great how you spent time with each of the band members as they prepared for their upcoming trip. It helped me to get to know them a little better. I was a bit confused about them too. They each seem to be interesting characters... they all have their own little stories going... that's so cool!
I hope Peri can repair the rift she has caused between her and Heydon. I would hate to see that little family fall apart.
Danny really does need to move on. Hopefully, he gets a handle on that drinking problem and finds himself a nice girl... one that helps him to forget his former love for Peri.
Stevie and Shaun finally tied the knot... And pooey! We didn't get to see it! I hope they are very happy together! They make a gorgeous looking couple!
Tyler's hand is still hurting? Kee hee hee! He must have really nailed Gabe a good one! He's definitely better off without Amanda... doubtful, though, that she's better off without him. She's a foolish girl not to realize it. Oh well, her loss...
I enjoyed the goodbye scene between Coop and Beth. They are so sweet looking together. It made me happy when she realized and said to herself how much she really loves him. How could she not love a guy like that??? I truly hope that dangerous attraction between her and Ryan is over.
And those shots with the airport and the plane in the air was terrific! It all looked pretty realistic! Great work! Catch you again on the next update! :D
Thank you for reading Tammy! I enjoyed taking a look at each of the band members. I had always wanted to bring each of them into the story at some point.
Danny does need to reconcile himself and his past with Peri. And Peri needs to pull herself together. Whether or not her family will stay intact is still up in the air. Lots of forces at play right now.
Shaun and Stevie sort of ran off to city hall and tied the knot. Sadly, Stevie's pregnancy advanced quicker than I wanted and I have had to shoot around it for story purposes so a public wedding was not possible. I did take a few shots but I doubt I will post them.
Cooper and Beth have a very strong bond. I think it is normal to feel some attraction to another but to act on it is something else entirely.
Tyler did as much as he could to Gabe without jeopardizing his future. As for Amanda, no, she doesn't deserve him and I think she will realize too late what she gave up and for what.
I am really pleased that the scene worked. I put a lot of effort into it so if it came across, I am really happy about that!
